SIAM welcomes new SIAG Officers

New SIAG officers have been elected for several of SIAM’s activity groups. Terms began on January 1. Officers of all SIAGs will serve 2-year terms, with the exception of the SIAG on Linear Algebra, which elects for three-year terms. We welcome all new appointees and thank all candidates for their participation.

Full details on all new officers, their research interests, and SIAM activities are below: 

SIAG on Analysis of Partial Differential Equations

Edris Titi is the new Chair of the SIAG on Analysis of Partial Differential Equations. A professor of computer science and applied mathematics at The Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel, Dr. Titi was designated a SIAM Fellow in 2012. His research interests are in nonlinear partial differential equations, applied mathematics, numerical analysis, fluid mechanics, and dynamical systems. Previously, he served as Program Director for the SIAG.

The newly-elected Vice Chair is Catherine Sulem. She is a professor at the University of Toronto. Her area of research includes nonlinear partial differential equations, Schroedinger equations, water waves, and interface dynamics. She has previously served on the editorial board of the SIAM Journal of Mathematical Analysis.

Suncica Canic has been elected as the SIAG’s Program Director. A professor of mathematics at the University of Houston, she also serves as the Director of the Center for the Mathematical Biosciences at the university. She has co-chaired and organized past SIAM APDE meetings.

Anna Mazzucato is the new Secretary for the SIAG. A mathematics professor at Penn State University, she works in the areas of partial differential equations, fluid mechanics and elasticity, numerical analysis, inverse problems, and harmonic analysis. She served on the selection committee for the AMS-MAA-SIAM Frank and Brennie Morgan Prize from 2009-2011.

SIAG on Computational Science and Engineering
Uli Ruede is the new Chair of the SIAG. He is a professor at the University Erlangen-Nürnberg in Germany and Director of both the Institute of Scientific Computing and the Indo-German Winter Academy. Dr. Ruede is a SIAM Fellow. He was the Editor-in-Chief of the SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing from 2005-2010, and has served on the SIAM book committee and the SIAM Undergraduate Research Online editorial board. He has previously served as Program Director for the SIAG. His research interests span diverse areas including multilevel and multigrid methods, high performance computing, hardware-aware algorithms, computational fluid dynamics, image processing, and visualization.

Karen Willcox has been elected the new Vice Chair. She is a professor and Associate Department Head of Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT and Co-Director of the MIT Center for Computational Engineering. She previously served as Program Director for the SIAG. Dr. Willcox currently serves as Associate Editor for the SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing and the SIAM Journal on Uncertainty Quantification as well as on the editorial board of the SIAM Book Series on CS&E. She has organized and co-chaired past CS&E conferences. Her interests lie in model reduction, uncertainty quantification, optimization, and multifidelity methods.

The new Program Director is Lois Curfman McInnes. She is a researcher in the Mathematics and Computer Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory, working in the area of high-performance scientific computing, nonlinear PDEs, and multiphysics algorithms and software. Dr. McInnes serves on the editorial board of SIAM News. She has formerly served as Vice Chair of the SIAG.

The new Secretary for the SIAG is Hans De Sterck. A professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Waterloo, Canada, his research interests are in numerical linear algebra, numerical PDEs, computational fluid dynamics and magnetohydrodynamics, and space physics, among other interests. He currently serves as Associate Editor of the SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing.

SIAG on Financial Mathematics & Engineering
Ronnie Sircar has been elected the new Chair. A professor at Princeton University, his research interests are in financial mathematics and mathematical economics, more specifically, in the areas of commodities and environmental finance, as well as dynamic game theory, asymptotic analysis, and stochastic control energy. He has served as Secretary, and most recently as the Vice Chair of the SIAG. He is also Co-Editor-in-Chief of the SIAM Journal on Financial Mathematics.

Kay Giesecke is the new Vice Chair. He has previously served as Secretary and Program Director. Dr. Giesecke is a professor in the Department of Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University. His research is in the area of mathematical and computational finance, systemic risk and risk management, Monte Carlo simulation, and statistics of stochastic processes. He co-organized the 3rd SIAM Conference on Financial Mathematics and Engineering in 2010.

The new Program Director is Sebastian Jaimungal.  A professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of Toronto, his area of research is in algorithmic and high frequency trading, applied stochastic control, singular perturbation theory, indifference valuation, and commodity models and derivatives. Dr. Jaimungal has organized various panels and minisymposia at past SIAM conferences on Financial Mathematics and Engineering.

Michael Ludkovski has been elected the new Secretary. He is a professor in the Department of Statistics and Applied Probability at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His research interests are in stochastic games, energy markets, high-frequency trading, optimal stopping, and nonlinear filtering using Monte Carlo. Dr. Ludkovski co-chaired the 2012 SIAM Conference on Financial Mathematics and Engineering.

SIAG on Geosciences

Todd Arbogast has been elected the new Chair of the SIAG on Geosciences. A professor at The University of Texas at Austin, he is a co-advisor to the university’s SIAM Student Chapter. He also serves on the editorial board of the SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis. Dr. Arbogast previously served as the Program Director of the SIAG, and chaired the 2009 SIAM Conference on Mathematical and Computational Issues in the Geosciences. His area of research spans partial differential equations, homogenization and multi-scale analysis, subsurface flow phenomena, and high performance, parallel, scientific computing.

The new Vice Chair is Iuliu Sorin Pop. He is a professor at Eindhoven University of Technology in The Netherlands and adjunct professor at the University of Bergen, Norway. His research interests are in mathematical and numerical analysis, modeling, upscaling of reactive flow and transport in porous media. He has organized minisymposia at various SIAM conferences.

Knut-Andreas Lie is the new Program Director for the SIAG. Dr. Lie is Chief Scientist and Research Manager of SINTEF Information and Communication Technology in Norway. He is also a professor of mathematics at the University of Bergen and senior scientist at the Centre of Mathematics for Applications at the University of Oslo. His area of research includes flow in porous media, numerical methods for nonlinear partial differential equations, and heterogeneous high-performance computing.  He has served on the organizing committees of past SIAM conferences on Mathematical and Computational Issues in the Geosciences and as referee for several SIAM journals.

Beatrice Riviere is a professor in the Computational and Applied Mathematics Department at Rice University. She has been elected the new Secretary for the SIAG. She also currently serves on the editorial board of the SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis. Her research interests are in multiphase multicomponent flow, coupled free flows and porous media flows, numerical methods, multinumerics, and uncertainty quantification.

SIAG on Life Sciences

M. Gregory Forest is the new Chair of the SIAG. A professor of mathematics and biomedical engineering and Co-Director of the Institute for Advanced Materials at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, he is also Director of the Carolina Center for Interdisciplinary Applied Mathematics. His research interests include lung biology, diffusive and viscoelastic transport properties of soft materials, nematic fluids and nanoparticle dispersions, cell mechanics, and viral-antibody interactions. Dr. Forest is on the editorial board of the SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics, and has served on the organizing committees of the SIAM Conference on the Life Sciences, and the Conference on Mathematical Aspects of Materials Science, both in 2012. He is a Class of 2012 SIAM Fellow.

The new Vice Chair is Maia Martcheva. Dr. Martcheva is a professor in the departments of mathematics and biology at the University of Florida. Her main areas of interest are in mathematical biology, population dynamics, mathematical epidemiology, partial differential equations, and numerical analysis. She has organized minisymposia and a special session at past SIAM conferences.

Robert Guy is the new Program Director for the SIAG. A professor in the Mathematics Department at the University of California, Davis, his research interests are in mathematical biology, biofluid dynamics, scientific computation, and non-Newtonian fluid dynamics. He has organized minisymposia at several past SIAM conferences.

Janet Best has been elected as the new Secretary. She is a professor at The Ohio State University, and works in the area of mathematical neuroscience, dynamical systems, probability, stochastic processes, and random graphs. She was a member of the SIAM Diversity Advisory Committee from 2007-2012.

SIAG on Linear Algebra

Danny C. Sorensen has been elected as the new Chair of the SIAG on Linear Algebra.  He is a professor of computational and applied mathematics at Rice University. Dr. Sorensen is a SIAM Fellow and is currently on the editorial board of the SIAM book series on Fundamentals of Algorithms, as well as a past Associate Editor of the SIAM Journal on Scientific and Statistical Computing. His area of research is in numerical linear algebra, large scale eigenvalue problems and Lyapunov equations, and linear and nonlinear dynamical systems.

The new Vice Chair for the SIAG is James G. Nagy, a professor in the Mathematics and Computer Science Department at Emory University. Dr. Nagy serves on the editorial boards of the SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing, the SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications, and SIAM Undergraduate Research Online. He has previously been on the editorial board of the SIAM Book Series, Fundamentals of Algorithms. His research interests span numerical linear algebra, structured matrix computations, inverse problems, and image processing.

Francoise Tisseur is the newly-elected Program Director. A professor of numerical analysis at the School of Mathematics at The University of Manchester, Dr. Tisseur’s research interests are in numerical analysis, numerical linear algebra, matrix analysis and mathematical software. She serves on the editorial board of the SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications and as guest editor of SIAM News.

The new Secretary is David S. Bindel. He is a professor in the Computer Science Department at Cornell University. He has presented minisymposia at various past SIAM conferences. His areas of work include numerical linear algebra, resonance phenomena and computation of resonances, finite element analysis, and modeling of micro-electro-mechanical systems and computer networks.

SIAG on Nonlinear Waves & Coherent Structures

The new Chair for the SIAG is Edgar Knobloch. He is a professor of physics at the University of California, Berkeley. He has previously served as the Vice Chair of the SIAG, and has chaired and participated in the Crawford Prize committee in past years. He is currently on the editorial board of the SIAM Journal on Applied Dynamical Systems. His research interests are in nonlinear dynamics of dissipative systems focusing on bifurcation theory, theory of nonlinear waves, theory of turbulent transport and the theory of turbulence.

Margaret Beck is the new Vice Chair. Dr. Beck is a lecturer at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, UK, and her research interests are in partial differential equations, infinite dimensional dynamical systems, reaction-diffusion equations, viscous conservation laws, patterns and coherent structures, and long-time behavior of solutions. She served on the organizing committee of the SIAM Conference on Nonlinear Waves and Coherent Structures in 2012.

The Program Director for the SIAG is Paul Milewski. A professor of applied mathematics at the University of Bath, UK, his research interests are in nonlinear waves, internal and surface waves, geophysical fluid dynamics, and mathematical biology.

The new Secretary is Richard Moore. He is a professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. His main areas of research interest are nonlinear wave phenomena, localized structures, stochastic dynamical systems, nonlinear optics, and data assimilation. He has organized minisymposia at various past SIAM conferences.

SIAG on Uncertainty Quantification

Max Gunzburger is the new Chair of the SIAG. He is a professor and Founding Chair at the Department of Scientific Computing at Florida State University. Dr. Gunzburger is the Senior and Co-Founding Editor of the SIAM/ASA Journal on Uncertainty Quantification. He is a SIAM Fellow. He also serves on the editorial board of the SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, and the SIAM book series on Computational Science and Engineering and Advances in Design and Control. In previous years, he has served as Editor-in-Chief of the SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis and as Associate Editor of the SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization. His research interests are in numerical analysis, computational mathematics, partial differential equations, uncertainty quantification, climate modeling, fluid mechanics, superconductivity, and computational geometry.

The new Vice Chair is Mark Berliner. He is a professor and Chair at the Department of Statistics at The Ohio State University. His area of research spans Bayesian analysis and computation, decision analysis, and geophysical statistics. He was a plenary speaker at the first biennial SIAM Conference on Uncertainty Quantification in 2012.

Raul Tempone has been elected the new Secretary of the SIAG. He is an associate professor and founding faculty at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia, as well as Director of KAUST’s Strategic Research Initiative’s Center for Uncertainty Quantification. He is currently an associate editor of the SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing. His area of research spans numerical analysis, partial and stochastic differential equations, adaptivity, error control, probabilistic uncertainty quantification, inverse problems, Bayesian based model validation, sparse approximation, and Monte Carlo methods.

Youssef Marzouk is the new Secretary. He is a professor in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Marzouk was on the organizing committee of the first SIAM Conference on Uncertainty Quantification and has organized minisymposia at several past SIAM conferences. His research interests are in methods and applications of uncertainty quantification, statistical inference, data assimilation, fluid dynamics and chemically reacting flow in energy conversion processes and the environment.

SIAG on Geometric Design

Elaine Cohen is the new Chair of the SIAG. She is a professor of computer science and adjunct professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Utah. An active participant in various SIAM conferences, she has been on the program committees of multiple conferences sponsored by the SIAG. Her research interests are in symbolic and numerical computation, geometric design, and modeling with emphasis on freeform shapes, computational geometry and computational mechanics.

The new Vice Chair for the SIAG is Tim Strotman. A consultant at Siemens PLM, his area of research is in geometric modeling and geometric data compression. Dr. Strotman co-chaired the 2011 SIAM/ACM Joint Conference on Geometric and Physical Modeling, and has contributed to various SIAM conferences.

Jan Vandenbrande is the new Program Director for the SIAG. A technical fellow and lead of the geometry program at the applied math group at The Boeing Company, his research interests span solid and geometric modeling, differential geometry, geometric reasoning, optimization, mesh-less analysis methods and design methodologies. Dr. Vandenbrande  has served in various capacities on the organizing and program committees of the Physical Modeling Conference series, which is now a joint SIAM/ACM conference.

The SIAG’s new Secretary is Geraldine Morin. She is an assistant professor at the University of Toulouse in France, and her research work involves geometric modeling, 3D models for multimedia, and creation, edition and transmission of 3D content. She has actively participated in various SIAM conferences.
